In a statement released earlier this month, FCA US has announced its new partnership with autonomous driving company Aurora in order to develop and produce self-driving commercial vehicles.
Aurora is a company whose mission is “to deliver the benefits of self-driving technology safely, quickly and broadly.” The company is building a self-driving platform, dubbed the Aurora Driver, which will combine hardware and software to facilitate safe and effective self-driving vehicles. The platform has achieved level 4 autonomy, meaning it can sense and navigate its surroundings absent of any human intervention. The brand is backed by Chris Urmson, Sterling Anderson, and Drew Bagnell—all leaders in the self-driving tech industry—and it counts among its investors Amazon, Sequoia, and more.
The partnership could lead to production of FCA commercial vehicles integrated with the Aurora Driver technology, a few years down the line. The combination of driverless capabilities with commercial vehicles lines holds promise in a time where new, individual solutions to travel and transport are constantly being expected by businesses and consumers.
“As part of FCA’s autonomous vehicle strategy, we will continue to work with strategic partners to address the needs of customers in a rapidly changing industry,” said Mike Manley, Chief Executive Officer, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. “Aurora brings a unique skillset combined with advanced and purposeful technology that complements and enhances our approach to self-driving.”
